Steps to Raising Your Credit Score
April 10, 2009

People often don’t give credence to the advice of watching your credit history and score closely. However, often items you don’t know that are on your credit history can keep you from qualifying for important loans or credit lines that you are counting on. They can also cause to be paying higher interest rates on credit that you do. There really is no secret for the steps to take to raise your credit score; it just takes a lot of hard work.

The first step you should do is to know everything that is on your credit history. There are many free credit history services out there where you can obtain copies of your credit history. It is important to note that you should not check your credit history by using multiple ones of these offers, since repeated and numerous inquiries into your credit history and score may actually negatively affect the credit score. These numerous inquiries are usually (and will be assumed as) multiple applications for loans and credit loans. When someone has been applying for many loans, loan companies will look more negatively upon the applications.

Since there are three credit history agencies in the US, you will want to obtain copies of all three credit histories or do get a three in one credit history file. That way you can see all three credit histories so that you can see any negative items. Keep in mind that sometimes a history in from one credit bureau will have different items versus a history from another.

Review your credit history carefully so check if there are any errors or inaccuracies in them. If you do find some, you should work to correct them as soon as possible. Each credit history agency will have different processes for working to correct any errors in the credit history. You should send along a request and documentation, and they are required by law to investigate. Errors may be an error in credit items, evidence of identity theft, or actually correct. Thus, you should investigate any of these possibilities diligently.

Also, beware of any company that may promise to give you a clean credit slate or to raise your credit score even if you don’t have errors on your credit history. These are simply not possible. It is illegal to start with a new social security number or clean slate, and the only way to remove correct negative items on your credit history is time (usually a period of 9 years). Also, for any credit consulting companies, make sure that you do not pay any fees before they do any services.

A good option is to get a credit monitoring service which will alert you of any changes and allow you access to your credit history and score.

To make sure your credit history is as good as it can be, pay your bills on time. It’s as simple as that.
